For 20 years, Citybox has offered a smarter, simpler hotel experience. What started as one hotel in Bergen has grown into an international hotel chain, with locations across multiple cities in Europe.

On April 21st, we turn 20.

Not bad for something that started as a slightly different idea for a hotel in Bergen back in 2006. A hotel without all the unnecessary extras. No minibar. No concierge. Just a smart, central place to stay, so you could spend more time and money outside the box, exploring the city.

It was a simple idea from our founder, Martin Smith Sivertsen. Or as he put it: “The whole city is full of bars. Why would you need one in your room?”

It worked.

From one hotel in Bergen to multiple cities

What started as one hotel in Bergen has grown into a network of hotels across multiple cities and countries. But Bergen is still where it all began, and where we’ve learned, tested, and refined what Citybox is today.

And we’re not done.

In 2027, we’re opening our third hotel in Bergen. Right behind Bryggen. A location we’re pretty excited about, and one that connects where we started with where we’re going. After nearly 20 years operating hotels in Bergen, we know the streets, the rhythm, and what travelers actually need when they stay here.
